Congressman Andrews Highlights Opportunity for South Jersey As New Medical School Opens Its Doors

Jul 27, 2012

CAMDEN, NJ -- Tuesday, Congressman Andrews announced that Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is now complete and ready to educate up to 400 medical school students.  In addition to the near 300 construction jobs that the project has created, the school will employ over 100 permanent teachers, administrators, and maintenance personnel.

The completed, six–story, 200,000 square foot facility is designed around an innovative curriculum, that houses spaces and technology necessary to support students as they become healthcare professionals. The facility features 25 class rooms, where students will spend most of their time focused on learning in small groups of eight during their first two years of medical school. There are several floors of labs that will be used by biomedical science faculty and graduate assistants for basic science research.  This building also contains a 250-seat auditorium, a large multipurpose room, learning commons which are rooms designed for students to interact and complete projects together outside of the class-room, and a medical library.

“The new state-of-the-art medical school in Camden is a remarkable addition to South Jersey’s already renowned health care system,” said Congressman Andrews. “The benefits of this school will not only result in more smart, medically-trained professionals to serve our region and improve wellness, but the school will provide another source for local economic growth and medical breakthroughs that can sustain our region for years to come.”

Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), the first new medical school in New Jersey in 35 years. Located at South Broadway and Benson Streets in Camden, CMSRU will help address the physician shortage locally and nationally and improve healthcare throughout the region. Its inaugural class begins in August 2012.
